RIP VIII: Making a List

Time to get your creepy on! Once again Carl brings us the Readers In Peril Challenge, Part 8. It’s the most fun you can have being scared while reading. I try to keep a few books in mind for the challenge all year long. I was starting to think that after 8 of these challenges that I’ve read everything, but there is always something out there.

As usual, I am choosing Peril the First:

Read four books, any length, that you feel fit (the very broad definitions) of R.I.P. literature. It could be King or Conan Doyle, Penny or Poe, Chandler or Collins, Lovecraft or Leroux…or anyone in between.

My choices are:

  • The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson (a re-read)
  • Pig Island by Mo Hayder
  • The Shining by Stephen King (for the Shinealong)
  • Troubled Daughters, Twisted Wives edited by Sarah Weinman
  • Bellman and Black by Diane Setterfield (if I can get a copy)
  • Jane Austen and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor by Stephanie Barron
  • The House at Riverton by Kate Morton
  • Rosemary’s Baby by Ira Levin
  • And anything else I see

This should be interesting since I don’t own all on the list yet. I need to place an order.

I thought it might be fun to to watch a few scary movies this year too, so I’m signing on for Peril on the Screen.

  • Rosemary’s Baby (after the book)
  • The Stepford Wives
  • The Shining (after the book)
  • Rear Window

So there is my list for the spookiest challenge for the best part of the year. I love autumn! I can’t wait to enjoy every minute of it.

  1. I'm definitely planning on reading The House of the Vampire that you recommended.

  2. The House at Riverton has been on my TBR for a while -- if I get through my first four, that may be next!

  3. I like Kate Morton and have enjoyed all her books, so I hope you like that one. Never heard of Pig Island so I will check that out at Amazon when I leave here! .. I also have Bellman and Black.. I hope my expectations aren't too high!

  4. I am joining too!! Haven't posted about it yet though. I need to come up with a list but I plan to read Bellman and Black and the new King book when it comes out. I only signed up for two books and the movie option. I might change my mind though and read more. I love this time of year!

  5. What a stack! I'm starting to see the latest Setterfeld book on a few lists. Happy reading.

  6. You have SUCH a good Peril Pool!

  7. Clearly some classic horror on there...I hope you enjoy!

  8. Thank you for reminding me about this event!! Just made my blog post for it!

  9. I really need to get my list together! You know The Shining is on my list and if I can find my copy of The Haunting of Hill House, that will be there too. I have a list of others, but I need to narrow it down a bit more. Maybe I will do that before I head to bed tonight!

  10. You do have an awesome list, Chris! I see a lot of us are reading The Shining this time around. I am planning on it too, because the sequel is out in September! Doctor Sleep! I am so excited! You have named two of my favourite horror books on your list - The Shining, and The Haunting of Hill House. I have to get a copy of Hill House, I lost mine several years ago. I haven't quite made my list up, I will be posting tomorrow. Love your list, and hope you enjoy them all :-)

  11. I see the Setterfield on many lists. I hope people enjoy it! I have it pre-ordered.

  12. I really enjoyed The House at Riverton so I hope you get the chance to read that one! And I'm hoping to read The Haunting of Hill House too. Good luck with this challenge :)

  13. Thanks for joining in! I was just saying elsewhere that I really need to give Kate Morton a try. Her books always sound like they would be right up my alley.

Shirley Jackson is always a great choice.

I'm reading the ARC of the Setterfield now, it is good so far. If it keeps up like this I'll be snagging a hardcover when it comes out just to have a nice copy.

  14. I have Morton on my list too! She's perfect for this challenge.
