I started reading The Passage
Lately, the book blogosphere is buzzing with talk about the dos and don'ts of blogging. And here's my take on it. Rules? There are no rules! A blog ain't no democracy. It's your space. You are the Queen/King of your own blog. The Master of Your Domain Name.
While it's nice to make your place comfy for visitors, in the end it's your home. Not everyone is going to like your Marmaduke of a dog or the cat that sits on people but would you get rid of them? No. There are people who will keep coming back because they like your conversation. Others will be content to wave from the sidewalk. That's their prerogative.
Keep writing the posts you want to write. Talk about whatever is on your mind. Post pics of your kids or cats if you want to. Gush about the book you're reading. Be mean. Be nice. Be honest. People can argue about what should or shouldn't be on a blog all they want but you'll drive yourself crazy trying to please others.
As Billy Joel once said, "Don't go changing to try and please me." Please yourself.
congratulations to your daughter on her communion!
ReplyDeleteGreat post about being master of your domain! I agree. When I first started blogging, just a few months ago, I wasn't sure if there was a protocol to follow, or what. But now I realize, that I can do what I want to do! Everyone should be comfortable posting whatever they want. After all... are you doing it for you or are you doing it to please the masses?
Have a great Sunday!
I couldn't agree more, Chris!
ReplyDeleteI agree - part of what makes blogs interesting is that they're all different!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! It's always good to be reminded that it's our blog, our opinions, and I needed that reminder this week. I appreciate this: "A blog ain't no democracy. It's your space. You are the Queen/King of your own blog. The Master of Your Domain Name."
ReplyDeleteRight on! Hear, hear! (or is it here, here?) YES! And anything else that means... I agree!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your wonderful thoughts. As someone who is new to this whole blogging thing, I was worried that I was doing it "wrong". I wondered if there was a certain way that things needed to be done. You are right, if they like me they will stick around. If not, they'll move on.
ReplyDeleteThank you - a timely reminder and exactly what I needed to hear this morning. My problem is not the masses but the rules and expectations I place on myself.
ReplyDeleteAmen, sister! Blogs are as individual as their owners and therefore cannot be subject to rules. "We don't need no stinking rules!"
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to the Chicklet on her First Communion! That is a huge milestone! (Are pictures of the pretty dress forthcoming on the bookclub site?)
Congratulations to your daughter on her First Communion! We celebrated my nephew's today, too.
ReplyDelete... and Amen to all the rest!
Amen to this Chris!!! I just loved this post. I get so sick of hearing the dos and don'ts of book blogging. Just have fun and write what you like! Congrats to your daughter :) Hope you get some R&R!
ReplyDeleteMy sentiments exactly! I've stopped reading posts about bloggers' dos and don'ts for my sanity.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to your daughter on her communion.
I've been seeing The Passage pop up on blogs today, but I confess I've never heard of it. I'm so out of the loop!
I hope you have a great week!
I've been a bit out of the blog-loop lately as I've been busy with real life. So I don't really know what the hubbub is. But I also don't care. There are no rules. I read blogs I like and skip those that post things I'm not interested in. That's my rules.
ReplyDeleteHear, hear!! I couldn't agree more, either!
ReplyDeleteExactly! Well said!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm a new blogger and started getting mini panic attacks with all the dos and don'ts. I had to sit back and just think about what I like. I'm glad someone (YOU) can come out and say 'just do what you want.' Thank you.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with you on the blog rules. I've seen so many posts about pet peeves it makes me peevish ;)
ReplyDeleteI love this post! This is totally my philosophy too. You rock!
