Ratings System
As of June 2011, I started a new ratings system for my book reviews. Since I read such a variety of genres, I can't always rate them the same way. Some books are just for fun, some are more introspective. How can I rate both Confessions of a Shopaholic and Jane Eyre the same even if I loved them both? This is my solution.
Each review is accompanied with a rating of cupcakes and apples.
Cupcakes are sweet and delicious but they don't have much nutritional value. A cupcake every once and awhile is a satisfying treat just don't overindulge. The cupcake rating is for the entertainment value of a book.
An apple a day keeps the doctor away, or at least fulfills daily nutritional requirements. They may not hit the spot like a cupcake can but a crispy apple is yummy too. The apple rating is for the literary value of a book.

Ideally a book would be 3 apples and 3 cupcakes, but that's a rare thing. However, there's nothing wrong with an all cupcake or all apple book. It just depends on what you're in the mood for!
*Any similarity to other ratings systems is coincidental.
