Lazy Bookish Thoughts: Reading Again

Helllllllloooooo! I’m still here. I’m reading and buying books and actually looking forward to reading said books.

First off, I picked up The Shining by Stephen King for the Shine-along in September. I read it years ago. I think I was shocked at how awful Jack was. It will be interesting to re-read it now.

I gave up on Save Me the Waltz by Zelda Fitzgerald. It’s supposed to be somewhat autobiographical and it was interesting but…. half the time I didn’t know what the hell she was talking about. Remember Brad Pitt’s commercial for Chanel No5? How confusing and weird that dialogue was? Save Me the Waltz is like that at times. For example,

“Sometimes,” commented David irrelevantly, “your face looks like a soul lost in the mist on a Scotch moor.”

what

What?

I could enjoy it at some other point in time but I just don’t have the patience for that kind of thing at the moment. Anyway, they have money and then they don’t and then they do, and eventually it’s going to end badly. Moving on.

I finished The Heiress Effect by Courtney Milan last night. I’ll be writing up a review soon, though I don’t know when because something has come up that I have to deal with. Life, man.

  1. Hm, it almost sounds like Zelda was already struggling with mental issues when she wrote that book.

    1. I wondered the same or that she was chemically altered at the time.

  2. Don't you hate it when life gets in the way of reading and blogging?! As far as the Zelda book, I can't read that stuff. Anything too stream-of-consciousness just drives me crazy. I read Faulkner's As I Lay Dying for the challenge this year, and it about killed me.

    1. Yep, I think there was a bit of "I'll show him!" in this book. On her own, I think she was just as talented as F Scott, but she needed to not try so hard.

  4. The Shining! yaaay! I forgot about the read-along, I have to decide if I can join it or not. I'd like to, The Shining is one of my favourite horror books and it's due for a reread this year. Jack was and is always awful. Are you going to pick up the sequel, Dr Sleep, when it comes out this fall? I am. Danny Torrance, grown up!!

    1. I'm not sure about the sequel. I don't know if I can read a book about middle aged Danny.

  5. I am sooooo excited to revisit The Shining!! It has been a really long time since the last time I read it. And, I always tend to like King books better on a re-read! Cannot wait!! (I swear I'm not biased at all on this one!!) :)

  6. When I read The Shining again a few month's back, I was surprised that I still like the movie better. It's one of those rare instances where I think the movie was better.

    1. Well, Kubrick wasn't a bad director either. ;)
