Not Feeling It

Okay, so I've been reading this book for a couple of days now. I'm trying to give it a chance because some folks on Goodreads liked it and how can they be wrong? The book in question is The King's Mistress by Emma Campion. I'm on page 112. Maybe it's just me but every time I pick it up, I want to put it down. I just can't get into it.

It's slow paced. At 100+ pages all that's happened so far is she's married this really nice guy. I mean really nice. And just like a character announcing they 'have 2 days until retirement' you know some shit is going to go down. The protagonist, Alice, is too nice as well. She doesn't have much of a personality at this point (I think she's 15 or 16) but for some reason the royalty want to be her bff and give her horses and stuff. Her mom is a nutter. And there are seeeeeeccccrrreeeeets because her hubby keeps distracting her with shiny things whenever she asks questions. I'm getting annoyed with the two of them.

So I don't know. Is this book just not for me? Is this a DNF?

How long do you give a book before you quit it?

  1. I don't know the book so I can't say that it will get better. But when I read the words "every time I pick it up, I want to put it down. I just can't get into it.", I knew this was a DNF.

How can you even think of continuing? :-)

  2. I have become more merciless ever since I FORCED myself to finish The Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder for a reading challenge task, and realized it accounted for 8 hours of my reading life that I could never get back. I say DNF!

  3. Leeswammes- I keep thinking something has to happen soon and it's just my restless mood.

Col- It was sent to me as a review book so I feel like I have to give it a chance. But I think it might be the end for me.

  4. After forcing myself to read many books I hated, my motto is NOT to read a book that bores me. I agree, DNF!

  5. I've just recently decided to be more ruthless about not finishing. Depending on how long the book is...I'm going with about 100 pages. Just gave Zorro: A Novel the axe last week or so. There are just too many books waiting out there to waste time on those that are not doing it for you!

  6. I agree with Bev Hankins.
My 4th grade teacher told me to give a book 100 pages or 4 chapters. That has been my rule ever since!
    Life is too short...

  7. It sounds like you've given it a fair chance.

  8. I know some people liked it but I didn't - it was a DNF for me.
I agree - too many good books waiting to waste time on ones you don't like.

  9. I don't have a set rule on when to give up on a book. Sometimes I'll give up a few pages in and others I'll be halfway through before I put it aside. Regardless, I say if it's not holding your interest, move on to something that does!

  10. Oops, that was me, not an anonymous poster - too quick with the keys!

  11. I don't have a certain number of pages or chapters that I'll allow a book. It's more like I just put it down one day and then I can't muster up any excitement to keep on reading. That's when I know it's time to call it quits.

  12. If I feel that "meh" that far in, I toss it. Just sayin'. :D

  13. I liked it. There are some interesting things that happen and the really nice husband doesn't last long.

  14. Ok probably don't? But I would totally finish it, and every three pages I would be all DAMN YOU, JUST TELL ME THE SSSSSECRETS and I would be full of wrath and ire the entire time. But I am powerless in the face of secrets, so.

Now I kind of want to read it.

  15. I'm with Rach & then I'd be THAT'S the secret? Grrr.

But I'm reading (barely/slowly) a book that's not what I thought it was. Haven't given up yet. Haven't really gotten into it (page 99) either.

  16. Sarah & the 2 Kathys- Thanks.

Bev- I have so many books to get to.

Cat- From the reviews, I'm wondering what is wrong with me. Glad it's not just me.

Lesley & Jill- I don't have a rule either. Maybe if I did, it would be easier to give up.

    Thanks Andi.

Michelle- I knew you liked it that's why I kept going. Not sure if it's for me or maybe it's not the right time.

Raych- I know! I want to know the ssseecrrets. I've been skimming ahead (shh!) but haven't figured it out yet. Read it and tell me. ;)

Carrie- I know, right? It better be a juicy secret.

  17. It depends on the book and the style. I just dnf'ed a romance at 50 pages because i knew there was just no way that it was going to engage my interest. I gave a book that sounds similar to your experience 112 pages be cause I just knew at any minute something was going to happen, but then it didn't and i realized that I just didn't care. A friend read this one and didn't like it all that much.
