This Old Thing?: Possession

I didn't post This Old Thing? last week because the holiday threw me off and nearly forgot this week. Bad me.

Possession by A S Byatt is one of those books I definitely want to read someday but someday never seems to come. It won the 1990 Booker Prize. People keep telling me what a great book it is. I hope to find out soon. It's a big book at 510 pages. So I keep putting it off.

I bought this one at the used book store for $5. It's in very good shape except for a small dent. It was once owned by someone named Brady in 1995.

A S Byatt has just written a new book called The Children's Book.

Have you read either or maybe something else by A S Byatt?

  1. I read Possession when it first came out and loved it. As it usually goes, I thought the movie was not nearly as good as the book. I have her new one near the top of my TBR stack.

  2. I haven't read anything by her but I picked up her book "Little Black Book of Stories" at a library book sale. I've been wanting to read her stuff, especially Possession. I think I'm going to love it so I want to find a used copy to own.

  3. It's on one of my "books I should really read" lists. I think I even checked it out of the library once. Why is there never enough time to read all the books you want to read?

  4. I'd put reading my copy off for years but when I got to it, I totally loved it. I hope you do too!

  5. I thought this book was great. I love the mixture of past and present stories. There were, however, a ton of poems in it that I skimmed over. I'll be waiting to hear if you skimmed too or read every word!

  6. Oooh, I have to comment. I really like this book--one of Byatt's most accessible works. And it's surprisingly funny at times, esp. the descriptions of academia.
I would also recommend The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye (short stories) if you want a quick introduction to her range and style.

  8. I love getting books that have the previous owner's name in it. I have a copy of The Secret Garden that was given as a christmas gift from and aunt to a nephew in the early 1900s-ish. It's just neat to see who had it before you!

  10. I've read (every word of) Possession three times! It's one of my absolute favourite books. I'll second the recommendation of The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye, too.

  11. I've been putting this one off for the same dang reason--so long!! I've heard amazing things both about the book and Byatt, so one of these days...
