Happy July 4th to our American friends! Have a good one. I hope it's drier there than here. The drizzly weather is making me grumpy.

*I guess readers are lonely people. Borders starts a dating service.

*Whatever you think of Michael Jackson, he was a voracious reader.

*Edith Wharton's letters find a home.

*Hoffman wasn't the only author to suffering from Foot-in-Mouth disease this week.

*It's a book written by a fictional writer who writes fiction. You follow?

*Awful Library Books: outdated books culled from libraries. A blog we can shake our heads and laugh about.

*John @ The Book Mine Set started a Canadian Book Trading Post. No canoe or portaging required. Great for your 3rd Canadian Books Challenge picks.

*There's hope for us all. Vanessa Brown a winner of Canada's 1st book-collecting contest. I bet she's going to buy books with that $1000.

*Etsy Love: from Consider Arson grammar magnets.

*Finally, this author knows how to turn lemons into lemonade. Instead of a hissy-fit, he makes a bad review into a funny book trailer.

Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. Now I want to read Brad Meltzer's book.
We will take your rain here in California, it is so dry we might brust into flame at any moment (and yet they are still selling fireworks).

  2. Ha!! I'm not normally one for book trailers, but I love that one. I think I actually want to read it now. :)

  3. What fun! I love the cat picture. Who'd have thought that about Michael Jackson? Gosh. And, the video is a hoot. It makes me want to read a Brad Meltzer book! I just love an author who can poke fun at himself (unlike that other guy who made himself a total fool by tearing apart a reviewer -- not interested in reading his work, now, and not because of the review).

  4. Love the 'Steamboats are Ruining the World' review. I read times review which was less snarky (but also nto entirely complementary) that made me want to stay away from this book and the entire premise sounds exceedingly patronising (but then that's coming from a girl who absolutely agrees with the first paragraph of that review, that general office work is usually a means to an end not a noble endeavour).

  5. I love all the blog press the Canadian Book Collecting prize is getting! Though your summary is a tiny bit off - Vanessa won 2nd place with her (totally impressive) collection. The Afterword has a Q&A with all three placers (the links to the other two are below the comments to Vanessa's interview.)

  8. Hahaha. That trailer was awesome. :) A surprisingly mature response to someone who wrote a "juvenile" book, no? :P Meltzer for the win!

  9. Next time I'm at the bookstore (which will probably be in an hour or two) I'm picking up Brad Meltzer's latest, no matter what his grandmother says. That was priceless.

    Perusing the links now.....have a happy 4th!
