How's the weather where you are? Cold? Or you lucky enough to live somewhere warm and tropical? Maybe put some of that in a bottle and send it to me ;)
* Whoa! Apple is censoring ebooks now?
* Maybe if everyone read, people would be much politer.
*I keep forgetting to sign up for this: reading Munsch to break a record.
*Hmm, this is interesting, maybe things aren't as bleak as they appear. Young people are reading again.
*"I’m not looking to ban books." Uh-huh. Is the Handmaid's Tale too voilent for 17 year olds? I know I had read much worse by that age. What do you think?

*If you're interested, a book blogger convention might be in the works. Join in the discussion.
*From S. Krishna's blog: more people are using the library.
*T-shirt giveaway "Take me to your Reader" from The Book Lady. (Click the t-shirt pic for a better look.)
*Etsy Love: from the House of Mouse, a reading mouse bookmark.
Up later this week, a review of Gods Behaving Badly and a Dewey's Knit-a-long update. Have a great weekend!
It's what I consider cold here - 14F - but people in Canada would probably laugh at that.
ReplyDeleteBrrrr! I concur! We were at -20 this morning. You guys are probably even colder. Yikes.
ReplyDeleteLezlie
it's a windchill of negative 40 Farenheit here in Chicago. Schools were canceled because they didn't want kids waiting for the bus.
ReplyDeleteAbout the apple ebook censoring: interesting that it was teh author that went ahead and censored his own book: "Carnoy decided to remove that type of language from the book, which he said didn't amount to all that many words in the first place." Why include it in the first place, if it doesn't make much difference? A fine example in my mind of how profanity is just sprinkled in for the heck of it; it's probably not necessary, and there are probably better words for what you want to say.
As for the Handmaid's tale, I'd also question why to read it in high school. There are so many better dystopian novels and that one is, I would have to say, pretty sexual and violent. I don't think it's banning to question school choice. But I wouldn't tell my son he "can't" read it. I'd just wonder why they choose that one.
Rebecca- I would say that that book was chosen because it's Canadian. I found it to be a frightening book. I'm not sure if I would have gotten it at that age. Most students are in university by age 18 and Handmaid's Tale would show up in the curriculum of many literature classes.
ReplyDeleteAs for Apple, will it ask all authors to censor their own books in order to be included? Where will they draw the line? Do they censor music available on their ipods? All questions I asked myself. Also bookstores do not censor the books in their shops, why should Apple? If they want to provide a warning, I think that's only fair to the reader. At least then they can make up their owns minds.
Onion- 14F. That's -10C. Pretty cold.
Lezlie- That's -29C! Good grief! No, it's not that cold here. It's -17C (about 2F).
Lezlie- Pardon me, 6F according to the weather website.
ReplyDeleteChris ~ What's a couple of degrees? Too cold is too cold, right? :-) (Love the LOLCat, by the way. That one cracked me up the other day!)
ReplyDeleteLezlie
I can't complain about the weather out in Southern California. Today it will be 81 degrees. It does seem weird that we're so warm and everyone else is freezing.
ReplyDeleteIt was -30°C here in Minnesota this morning, for the second day in a row. Our house is making disturbing cracking sounds.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to your review of Gods Behaving Badly. Here's a link to my wife's review of it on our classics group blog. I can link your review on our blog when you post it.
It's been thirteen below here for two days. But, I don't mind; yesterday we had a Snow Day. It's very, um, crisp outside. I've left you a small token of my appreciation on my blog.
ReplyDeleteChris, Oh I totally agree. Pretty weird for Apple to censor books ... but even weirder in my mind for an author to be ok with that.
ReplyDeleteLezlie- If it freezes the water in the dog's bowl, then it's too cold.
ReplyDeleteRob- My house was creaking last night. It freaks me out. I'll going to check out your wife's thoughts. Thanks!
Bellezza- Thanks!
Rebecca- Yeah, I thought that too. Usually they do it kicking and screaming, if at all.
The last few paragraphs of that article about The Handmaid's Tale perfectly sums up my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI love the reading mouse bookmark!
Have a great weekend, Chris :)
We are having two seasons at once here where I am. Spring in the day and freezing winter conditions at night. It is not bad just weird.
ReplyDeleteIt was cold here - in the 40's but now it's in the 70's. I know. I suffer so. :)
ReplyDeleteThere are some books I wouldn't want to read again and some I think are an utter waste of paper but banning books is ridiculous. It's the thought police. It just doesn't work.
I don't see Handsmaid Tale in High School. I was reading smut at that age. At least this has a message to discuss.
ReplyDeleteOMG its been -30 the past few days and aboslutely MISERABLE. Today it was finally above 0. I'm in MN
ReplyDeleteI read The Handmaid's Tale about a year ago because I heard there was some similar things going on at a local college. I read it, and I think it is definitely worth reading in classrooms.
"A Toronto parent says if students repeated some of the words from Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale in the school halls, they’d be suspended, so he questions why it is OK in the classroom."
ReplyDeleteApparently "context" means nothing to that moron.
Ohhhh... you promoted other bookmarks & not mine. Shame... oh, the shame! Hee Hee.
ReplyDeleteIt's sheri. I talked about you on my sunday salon post today.
have a good one.
A book blogger's convention would be wonderful but I know I wouldn't actually be able to attend this year.
