RIP III Challenge

Hurray! It's that time again. Carl is gearing up for the R(eaders) I(mbibing) P(eril) Challenge for the third year. I really look forward to it because I love autumn and enjoy a good (safe) scare. An atmospheric book is great for a dark and stormy night. Here's my list:

Peril the First (4 books):
*Coraline Neil Gaiman
*I Am Legend Richard Matheson
*The Lace Reader Brunona Barry
*Heart Shaped Box Joe Hill

And for extra credit, I plan on getting My Cousin Rachel by Daphne DuMaurier from the library. I had such a good experience last year with DuMaurier during the challenge that I'm anxious to read more.

So are you up for it too?

PS-Like my ghost? If you crochet, I have the pattern in my Etsy shop ;)

  2. Ah ghosts and poppets, how quintessentially R.I.P.! So glad you're in and have a great pool to pick from. Every time I turn around I learn of a Daphne DuMaurier novel that I didn't know existed!

  5. I read Coraline for this challenge another year... maybe... I actually cannot remember when I read it anymore...

And, ha, I like your ghost but I was given up as hopeless when it comes to crocheting... I can't get it and just make a mess. Same with knitting!

  6. I read Coraline aloud to my kids, and we loved it! I've had my eye on Heart-Shaped Box, but think it might be too scary. I'm kind of a wimp. :)

  7. I love that little ghost! It's incredibly cute. Hope you enjoy Coraline. I love it! Heart Shaped Box was pretty good too. Definitely suiting for this challenge! As for DuMaurier, Jamaica Inn just walked in my door today! Looking forward to that.

  8. I agree with Raidergirl. The first and the last are positively creepy (but absolutely adorable nonetheless). I've been meaning to read I Am Legend as well. Maybe sometime soon.

  9. I've also only read the first and last - both should fit the bill nicely. I love the crochet ghost but am far too talentless to make one myself. I shall have to admire yours instead!

  11. Your ghost is so cute!
I am still contemplating which books to choose for this one. I read Heart-Shaped Box earlier this year - very creepy and good. Hope you'll enjoy it!

  15. I have Coraline to read in November for the Birthday challenge! So I'll have to be careful what reviews I read so I don't learn about the plot (just if people love it as much as everyone seems to). Nice list, I love the Richard Matheson too who seems to be a very underrated horror writer! I still haven't read Heart-Shaped Box and forgot about it! Oh well, there's always next year (you hear that, Carl? We're already planning for next year!)
Thank you for all the times you've dropped by my blog, I'm so sorry it took me so long to find my way here again - you're on my blogroll now!

  16. I read Coraline a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. I'm curious to see what you think of My Cousin Rachel - I bought it on sale after reading Rebecca but have never gotten around to reading it.

  17. I really was thinking about adding "Lace Reader" to my list, but it got bumped from my by other things. I wouldn't be surprised if it magically ended up back on there. =)

I read "I Am Legend" for last year's R.I.P. challenge. I thought it was pretty great. Better than the film, though that wasn't as bad as I expected.

    Great selections!

  18. Hey Chris!

Great choices. Coraline is on my list as a re-read. Love that book.

Heart Shaped Box is fab, I really enjoyed that one. I have 20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill on this year's list, fingers crossed I enjoy that just as much.

Love the ghost! Didn't realise you were on Etsy - have checked out your shop and hearted you! Hooray fellow etsians!

  19. Coraline is definitely going to go on my list for next year. (mmmmm...or maybe as a bonus for this year if I "work" hard?)

I'm starting to get intrigued by Heart Shaped Box and will keep an eye out for your review. I love them! I Am Legend is a good choice, and ooh, so is the duMaurier!

Cute ghost! Still haven't finished my so called easy knit bunny that I started in April and have no idea what to do with a crochet hook, but I love crafty things. How do you manage to do all you do?
