The Friday Bookish Buzz: The Soggy Edition

I see the sun! It's been raining for 40 days and 40 nights. The neighbours are building an ark and animals are gathering 2 by 2. On the other hand, it's never been greener in August. Now the sun is beating it's way through. Hurray!

*Here's a story I've been reading about all week. The historical fiction novel The Jewel of Medina has been dropped by Random House. The book is a fictional account of the life of Prophet Mohammed's wife A'isha. After they gave it to Denise Spellberg (an author of a biography of A'isha) for a quote, she ran back to Random House with dire warnings. You can read about the story here. I first read the story on the SB's blog, where there is a discussion of whether Random House chickened out and questions about Spellberg's motives. They also have the prologue if you wish to read it.

*Everybody's talking about the Twilight series. There were 444 news articles about it on online this morning.

*The top ten fantasy worlds in literature. I wonder if WestJet flies there.

*100 places to connect with Other Bibliophiles. Who knew?

*Better late than never. Estella's Revenge is up for August.

*Davies vs Steinbeck this week.

*Bookworms get featured on Etsy. Storque article Etsy Finds highlights some sellers with gifts for book lovers. I love the book tree print.

Happy Reading!

  1. I actually knew of a couple of those 100 book sites.

Rain would be lovely! But then again, we haven't had any. Enjoy your sun!

  2. There was a discussion of The Jewel of Medina on National Public Radio's Talk of the Nation today. An excerpt from the book, and a link to a Wall Street Journal editorial can be found here.
