The Friday Bookish Buzz: Feb 15

In my part of the world, we're wringing out after the deluge we had on Thursday morning. Overflowing manholes everywhere. And that lovely covering of snow is gone. The backyard looks nasty. Anyway, I have a busy weekend of running the kiddie all over the place. I'll try to squeeze some reading in somewhere. Here's all the book news:

Neil Gaiman fan? He'll be offering one of his books for free online. Vote for your choice.

Gaiman is just one of the six authors to have their book posted on the Harper Collins website for free. Yay! Free books!

Still feeling frisky after Valentine's Day: Mills & Boon has been stoking loins for 100 years.

No wonder independent books stores are going out of business. Check out what Borders has planned.

Anne of Green Gables turns 100 this year. To celebrate you can (A) enter a letter writing contest or (B) read the prequel Before Green Gables written by Budge Wilson (Budge?!). Are you a reader or a writer?

Tolkien still makes news: A Hobbit and a Lawsuit.

Sadly, genre writer Phyllis A Whitney has died.

The Bookworms Carnival is up at The Book Ninja and she has a contest.

NaBloPoMo has some new rules
. If you're a blogger and slightly crazy, you may want to check this out.

Have a good one!

  1. Boo hoo! Only Canadians can write letters to Anne!

  2. The story about borders is interesting. I wonder what market they're targeting with that? So many people already do so many of those things at home. I wouldn't really be inclined to use the services.

  3. I'm curious too about the Borders stores. I wonder where these stores will open up as well. I do love the big box bookstores but mainly because of their cafes! I hardly ever look at their music sections. I have iTunes for that :)

  4. Which Gaiman book did you vote for?
I saw some beautiful Anne editions in Indigo today. There was a scrapbook of Anne stuff done very nicely. I guess we don't need to enter the Anne contest. Budge Wilson is a Maritime author of some children's books.
    NaBloPoMo sounds interesting.

  7. Well, I just spent hours jumping from one link to another and so on. It's been fun. Thanks, Chris.

I'd love to be visiting PEI this summer in celebration of Anne of Green Gables.

  9. It's great the Harper Collins is going to have free books on-line, however, I don't like read a lot on my computer. Blogs and groups are about it for me. I like to hold my books and curl up. Too bad I can't do that with my PC. I am interested in something like the Kindle though, it is suppose to be like reading on paper. I'm just waiting for the bugs to work out and for the price to go down.

I didn't know it is Anne of Green Gables 100 year anniversary, would you beleive I just started reading it a couple of days agofor the first time? I geuss that's how I am celebrating. I am enjoying it.

  10. well – what people don't know is that Harper Collins only launched this free online reading site after the bestselling author Paulo Coelho revealed his pirate coelho blog to the world during the DLD conference in Munich last January.
I read the interveiw he gave for Newsweek and can't help to join the dots:

I doubt Harper Collins would have made such a move without this author's pressure.
    Thumbs up for Pirate Coelho!

  11. Ladytink- Variety is the spice of life.

Booklogged- Have fun in PEI! It's so beautiful in the summer.

Stephanie- Thanks! Looks like American Gods might be the winner.

Teddy- It's not my favorite way to read either. Let me know if you get a Kindle. I'd love to hear what you think.

aart- Although I don't condone piracy, I think publishers have to change with the times. This is a start.

  12. Aart- Oh, Pirate! Duh! Took me awhile to clue in.
