It's February, the longest 28 (29) days of the year. It will snow. It will freeze. I'll wonder if it will ever end. Yeah, I look forward to February. At least I'll have an excuse to stay inside and read. It's too darn cold!
In March, the oldest bookstore in Canada is closing. The Book Room in Halifax, Nova Scotia has been open for 169 years. I've been in that store. It's small and cozy. It's a shame that independent bookstores have such a hard time. There hasn't been one in my area for years, except for the used bookstore. We have Coles which is a division of Chapters, the big box store in Canada. I'd love to open my own bookstore but I'd have to be independently wealthy for that. Bookstores aren't huge money makers. It's more a matter of love.
Author Colleen Bruneau laments the closing of The Book Room.
Specialized bookstores aren't immune either.
Here's an interesting view of Scarlett O'Hara.
Oprah picks Eckhart Tolle's A New Earth as her latest book club pick. Sorry O, that's not my thing.
An online book show is debuting in March.

"A thrifty 77-year-old spinster who rode the bus and ate frozen meals." That's not going to help librarians' image.
Need another challenge? How about the Banned Books Challenge: Feb 24- June 30.
Estella's Revenge just went up. February's theme: Change.

That's all I can come up with at the moment. Have a good weekend!
Bookstores around me are closing too. It's so sad. At least we still have more, but I'm going to miss Bonanza Books when it closes in March.
ReplyDeleteAnd tho oldest bookstore in Halifax? So sad.
Thats so sad about the bookstore! My favorite used book store recently closed down too. They're all having such a hard time of it now. I always wanted to open one but I'd have to become really rich to do it!
ReplyDeleteI have written about the Sunday Pavement book Bazaar on my blog. I simply love visiting it every two weeks.
ReplyDeleteAnd the biggest bookstore around my place has reduced to half. I feel so bad.
Another challenge, I'm doing good to keep up with the ones I've got now, LOL! But I'll probably sign up anyway, I can't resist.
ReplyDeleteI read about that bookstore closing. It's soooo sad.
ReplyDeleteOprah's books are usually not up my alley. I thought the earlier titles were too focused on misery (although I did like The Pilot's Wife) and I think she could have done better at choosing classics. Maybe she needs bloggers to advise her. :)
All- It is very sad. I'm sure it will be missed.
ReplyDeleteGautami- Thanks, I checked out your post.
Tammy- I'm not doing too bad staying away from those challenges.
Bookfool- Yes, most of her picks are downers. She needs a team of bloggers.
