Man, oh, man, it's cold outside! I'm wearing my fuzzy socks to keep my toesy warm. I hope it's warmer where you are. So what's new?:
Attention Atwood fans! She just handed in a new manuscript to her publishers. Watch for that.
For anyone who's complained about movie adaptations of books. It ain't that easy!
Speaking of movies. The Kite Runner is banned in Afghanistan. I don't know what to think about this.
Just cause I know you're all waiting for this: George Michael's Bio.
What a dilemma. Nabokov's son is torn about what to do with his father's last manuscript. What do you think?
Diana Gabaldon dives into the blogging world. Voyages of Artemis gives readers a look at her work in progress, the graphic novel of Outlander.
Happy Birthday Smurfs!
And finally, stolen from Scribbit, but she stole it first! Think of this when opening your new Amazon Kindle. When books were new technology:

Ohhhh, I was just wondering when Atwood was going to come out with something new!
ReplyDeleteAnd its cold here in Texas, too. I was wearing my wool socks last night as I cuddled up with "The Book Thief." :)
Kite Runner banned in Afghanistan... here are my thoughts (you said you didn't know what to say about this, so here it goes)...
ReplyDeleteAs a former U.S. Marine and veteran of Desert Storm, I find it that spreading "democracy" to other countries which are incompatible with the ideals is counter productive and offensive to other cultures... it took Kuwait 13 years after the first Iraq war to allow women the right to vote... so what was I in the hot Saudi desert for? Purpose versus practical application... I have been asking myself that question for the last 18 years... sorry for the rant... it was totally uncalled for... but when I think of all the young people who've died in Afghanistan "for democracy," I realize that democracy doesn't really translate to freedom of expression... (censorship is death). My apologies.
JCR
JCR- No apologies necessary. I support freedom of expression on my blog ;)
ReplyDeleteIt's very hard to imagine what it's like 'over there' and I guess that's why I didn't know what to say. I wouldn't want people dying over a movie yet it's hard to reconcile that with my own thoughts on freedom. It's all very, very sad and I can't seeing it ending anytime soon.
Trish- Atwood is always interesting. Keep your socks on!
ReplyDeleteSo you thought it was funny too? I'm still chuckling.
ReplyDeleteI've heard about the controversy surrounding Nabokov's manuscript. As far as I'm concerned, an unpublished manuscript belongs solely to its author, and disobeying his wishes for it is immoral, pure and simple.
ReplyDeleteI get that fans and scholars might have a hard time accepting the destruction of some of his work, but the fact is, they simply have no right to read it.
OMG, I love this video! It's hysterical!
ReplyDeleteIt's supposed to get down to around -15°F/-26°C here in Minnesota. Thanks for the fascinating link about Nabokov. He was one of my mom's college professors (!) and one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century. Certainly heaps better than (grrr!) John Steinbeck.
ReplyDeleteI'm already looking forward to the Atwood book! Stay warm :)
ReplyDeleteMichelle- I thought the book people would appreciate it.
ReplyDeletePoodlerat- I feel for Dimitri, especially since his MOM was supposed to get rid of it but never did. Way to leave a legacy!
Karen- I thought so too!
Rob- It did get quite a bit warmer. Now we're in for rain. How cool Nabokov taught your Mom!
Iliana- Hopefully it won't be too long until we can read it.
Yeah for the Atwood book! Thanks for the good news =)
ReplyDeleteThat article on film adaptations was really interesting. It's good to know the film creators have those kind of thoughts.
ReplyDeleteAnd I love that German monks skit - I've shown that to bunches of people and they all get the biggest kick out of it, too.
Oh, wow, I think it would be so sad to destroy that manuscript by Nabokov.
ReplyDeleteAnd, it's cold in Mississippi! In the 20's. I've got about 10 blankets piled on the bed because . . . this is the trouble with houses in the Deep South . . . we are a little lacking in insulation. The cat and I have been very affectionate with each other, also, trying to steal each other's warmth.
Yahoo! More Atwood! Thanks for passing this along. As she writes in multiple genres, I wonder which genre or genres it will be. I'm so excited!
ReplyDeleteThe You Tube video yad me ROTFLMAO! I think I have to steel it from you and Scribbit!
