Friday Bookish Buzz: Oct 12

It seems like a slow reading week for me. Things are a bit hectic here.
  • Mini Book Expo is a site I've been eyeing but haven't tried it out. You request a book, pay the shipping, and then review it. I don't know if any of you bloggers have tried it, but if you have, how is it?
  • After the Lemony Snicket incident, you got to wonder what's real on the internet. Here's a story from Josh Olson that illustrates that you can't believe everything you see. It also had me thinking, is this for real? He is a screenwriter after all! It's a long article but worth the jaw dropping end.
  • This video (that takes a minute to load) from Indigo books made me cry. I had no idea the state of Canada's school libraries were so bad.. The statistics are shameful.
  • I can't believe I just found this site: A Novel Challenge. If there's a reading challenge out there, you can find it here.
  • Last call for submissions for This is the Life's Bookworm Carnival. Today is the last day.
  • From Post Secret: a new book and an interesting book trailer.
  • I made the mistake of going to the bookstore. I bought Getting Over Edgar by Joan Barfoot and Negotiating with the Dead: A Writing on Writing by Margaret Atwood. Darn sale table!

  1. The Jesse James story is so completely bizarre. Whether or not it's real it's certainly worth a read! The one thing that kind of makes me think it's real is that the twist was not so surprising.

Or maybe it's just that I remember seeing something remarkably like this play out on epinions.com back when I used to hang out there a few years ago, and people discovered a very popular person there was a very made-up persona. Pics on her profile were straight out of stock photography catalogs and everything.

People can be SO messed up.

  2. Heather- I have come across people who make up stuff on the message boards but this is taking to all new and loony levels. This woman is obviously sick.

  3. I've been gone most of this week. Or at least away from my computer. So a late Happy Thanksgiving to you!! I saw John's Canadian Challenge. I really don't know a lot of Canadian authors. I guess it might be a good way to get to know some!!

Wendy's A Novel Challenge blog is evil!! And you wonder why I sign up for many challenges!!

  4. My favorite neighborhood indie bookstore is closing its doors at the end of the month. I'm so so sad about it. But today they're cutting back prices even further to get rid of stock, and I'll be heading there later. Christmas is coming, so I'll be stocking up on stocking stuffers.

  6. I had to read that one sentence three times before I realized you weren't calling Canada a state! I clearly need more sleep. :)
