The Friday Bookish Buzz

There's only a couple of days left of summer and
the weather is sunny and gorgeous. Not fallish at all! I've been taking advantage of it while I can. So what's new this week:
  • Julianne Moore is in Ontario shooting Blindness, based on the Jose Saramago novel. This book's premise scares me so much I can't bring myself to read it.
  • Moore has also written a children's book. Apparently you have to be an actor to get a book deal.
  • A new reading challenge is starting in 2008, the Back to History Challenge. Check it out.
  • The Word on the Street Festival is this Sunday in Halifax and next Sunday in Calgary, Kitchener, Toronto and Vancouver.
  • A new season of Corner Gas starts on Monday (Hurray!)
  • Carl promises that Friday is a big day for the RIP2 Challenge. Can't wait.

  1. Hi. Thanks for the BTT comment.

Negotiating With the Dead is a collection of Margaret Atwood's Empson Lectures, given at the University of Cambridge. No wonder we've never heard them. If they had taken place in Canada, no doubt CBC would have recorded the lectures.

BTW, I'll be doing Word on the Street Toronto. We'll have to compare notes.

  2. I usually avoid books written by actors until I hear a good review by someone I trust. I've found in past cases that publishers often publish such folks with "names" regardless of quality because they know there's a ready-made audience. Witness Bruce Boxleitner's disastrous, ever-so-brief foray into SF after Babylon 5 was over. I kind of felt sorry for him---I imagine that he probably had a genuine interest in trying to write, and that it isn't his fault he wasn't about to get an honest evaluation from a publisher eager to use his face recognition to sell books.

  4. Cereal Girl- Learn something new everyday.

Heather- Yeah, that could be a bit embarrassing. An honest opinion, no matter how harsh, is better than blowing smoke up the you-know-what.

Stephanie- Yes, it's Canadian but it's going to be run on WGN this fall.

  5. The history challenge looks interesting...not sure if I'll be able to do it, but I have enough books I want to read to make a list. I guess I'll see how R.I.P.II goes. I want to dig up a copy of The Thirteenth Tale!

  6. I love the Corner Gas/Dancing with the Stars commercial. pretty smart and hugely funny. It's hard to remember that Leon Rabinovitch is now super funny. I dont' watch it much, but it is cute.
